CBS Austin's Road Trip to Tulsa: Exploring the Bob Dylan Center

Tulsa continues to shine as a cultural hub, and CBS Austin’s recent visit to the Bob Dylan Center highlights its significance in the heart of the city's thriving arts district. As a 29,000-square-foot museum housing over 100,000 artifacts, the center offers an immersive experience that extends beyond Dylan’s legendary music to his broader artistic and literary legacy.

The segment features Steve Jenkins, director of the Bob Dylan Center, who recounts how Tulsa became home to this extraordinary archive. While Dylan hails from Hibbing, Minnesota, his deep appreciation for America’s heartland, combined with the vision of the George Kaiser Family Foundation, brought his personal collection to Tulsa in 2016. Now, visitors can explore rare music tracks, handwritten lyrics, photographs, films, and even Dylan’s own artwork—such as the striking 16-foot metal gate he designed for the center’s entrance.

Lilly Architects was honored to serve as the Architect of Record for this project, working alongside partners to ensure that the space reflects Dylan’s creative spirit while fostering a meaningful connection with the adjacent Woody Guthrie Center. The design enhances the visitor experience, allowing guests to step into Dylan’s world through interactive exhibits, carefully curated displays, and artist collaborations.

Inspired by the land, people, and cultures that have shaped us, Lilly Architects remains committed to designing spaces that celebrate history, artistry, and community. The Bob Dylan Center stands as a testament to that mission, offering visitors a deeper understanding of one of America’s most influential artists.
