A once-forgotten warehouse in Tulsa Arts District now thrives as a multi-use space for artists, retail, and community engagement.

retrofit Magazine covered the remarkable transformation of the Archer Building, a 72,000-square-foot former warehouse in Tulsa’s Arts District, into a thriving multi-use space featuring artist studios, retail, and restaurants. Once a hub for wholesale distribution and later long-term storage, the Archer Building has been brought back to life thanks to the vision of the George Kaiser Family Foundation (GKFF) and the expertise of Lilly Architects.

Lilly Architects played a crucial role in restoring the building’s historical integrity while adapting it for modern use. Principal Architect Chris Lilly emphasized the importance of transforming aging structures to preserve cultural heritage and activate urban spaces. Their work included meticulous efforts to restore steel windows, repoint masonry to match original mortar, and uncover “ghost signs” that tell the building’s rich history. A rooftop terrace, artist-friendly spaces, and even an underground jazz club now enhance the building’s dynamic presence in the district.

By prioritizing adaptive reuse, the Archer Building’s renovation not only preserves its past but also supports Tulsa’s cultural and economic future. This project serves as a model for sustainable urban revitalization, ensuring that historic spaces remain relevant and engaging for generations to come.
