Honoring Mid-Century Design

Designed by the Tulsa firm Black and West Architects and completed in 1955, the Tulsa County Courthouse exemplifies mid-century civic architecture, blending innovation and purpose. Over the decades, this iconic structure has become a vital part of the community, but weathering and wear have compromised its integrity. In partnership with Tulsa County, Lilly Architects is leading an ARPA-funded effort to preserve the courthouse’s historical character while addressing critical safety and structural needs. Reflecting Lilly Architects’ commitment to designing with integrity and value, this renovation ensures the courthouse will continue to serve as a symbol of Tulsa’s resilience and progress.

Restoring the Facade: A Balanced Approach

The courthouse’s facade, featuring a blend of marble, brick, and limestone, is both a testament to its era and a key focus of this renovation. Irreparably damaged marble panels will be replaced with modern cladding that honors the building’s original aesthetic while providing durability for the future. The majority of the brick veneer, impacted by cracking and spalling over decades, will also be replaced to restore the structural stability of the facade. At the same time, the limestone—a defining feature of the building’s exterior—will be carefully cleaned, repointed, and sealed to maintain its timeless appearance and integrity. This dual approach reflects Lilly Architects’ dedication to balancing preservation with thoughtful modernization.

Life Safety: Enhancing Protection

A key component of this project is improving the overall life safety standards of the building. Upgrades to the fire protection systems will enhance the building’s ability to safeguard its occupants and its structure. Additionally, aging mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems will be modernized to ensure reliable and secure performance. These enhancements demonstrate Lilly Architects’ commitment to delivering practical and effective solutions that prioritize safety while preserving the building’s historical character.

Revitalizing Tulsa County's Civic Heart

This renovation represents more than a building upgrade—it’s a reflection of Lilly Architects’ mission to enrich lives and landscapes in downtown Tulsa and across Oklahoma. By safeguarding the courthouse’s historical integrity while implementing forward-thinking solutions, this project ensures the courthouse remains a safe, functional, and enduring civic landmark. As a firm deeply rooted in Tulsa’s architectural narrative, Lilly Architects is proud to contribute to renewing a cornerstone of the city’s heritage and future.
